There are three different kinds of common squirrels, each have different habits. In order to plan for their removal, you would need to know which species they are dealing with first. The first one is the tree squirrel which can be seen jumping from trees. They are mostly active in the early morning looking for food and in the afternoon. The flying squirrels, known for their gliding motions through trees can be thought of as flying, are more active at night.
The ground squirrel can be uniquely identified because they don't jump on trees, and rather stick to the ground. We all know prevention is definitely better than cure, so let's look at a number of ways we can prevent your precious home from this infestation. To prevent them form jumping to your roof from trees, you need to cut down all limbs within 8 to 10 feet of the roof on the house.
Another precaution is to remove bird feeders which act as a good source of food for the squirrels. You also have the option to keep them out of your compound by putting up a wire mesh, which should be not more than a half inch square. You can trap squirrels but you may want to consult your local conservation offices first because squirrels are protected. The next step is to find the entry point for the squirrels to your house. You can set up harmless traps for them at these points. Ground squirrels are easily trapped with one way door cages on controlled by repellants such as rodenticides.
